data security

Data security is usually an afterthought for most of our customers but at WTSi we like to discuss your long-term security requirements with you up front. Security considerations often drive the hardware component selections - and the wireless protocol selections - on many types of wireless systems. WTSi doesn't want your competitors to have a  security 'bullet' on their product spec sheet that you do not have on your product's spec sheet.

the-internet-of-things (IOT)

Getting your product connected to the cloud should be a priority as "The Internet-of-Things" (IoT) technology is here to stay.   Remote tracking, inventory monitoring, device configuration, and other communications services are increasingly being added to the devices that surround us in our daily lives: residential utility meters, refrigerators, passports, voice-activated online-ordering devices, etc. The market is limited only by your imagination.

Google, Amazon, and Apple (see our blog post: Wireless Home Automation Ecosystems ) have fortunately both committed heavily to making it easy to connect your device to internet-of-things ecosystems with published APIs and sample code for developers.  Unfortunately however, neither company is helping with the critical backend services. The developer needs to connect to backend services, control access to services and sensors, and send notifications across a growing number of channels.  WTSi will help you fill this critical gap.

bluetooth

Trying to figure out which Bluetooth is right for you?  Let us help.  WTSi has created several bluetooth products for our customers and we continue electronic product development on custom bluetooth products and bluetooth upgrades to our customers legacy products.  We have a wide assortment of development tools and specialized test equipment for testing your product before deployment.  We develop Android and Apple iOS applications for smartphones and tablets and we also work hand-in-glove with third-party Android and Apple iOS developers who may or may not have the expertise and/or tools necessary for debugging complicated system-level issues.  WTSi can update your legacy products or help you create new products with additional features and benefits.

Markets:

  • legacy device upgrades for wireless connectivity
  • test equipment
  • medical devices
  • key fobs
  • health and fitness devices
  • mobile hands-free devices

mesh networks (IEEE 802.15.4)

Zigbee mesh, or Zigbee-related mesh technologies are the backbone of the Internet-of-Things technology movement. 6LoWPAN is a Zigbee derivative which inherently provides IPv6 enhancements for the future of the internet and Thread is yet another open, IPv6-based, low-power, secure and future-proof mesh networking technology for IoT products which is used by Google's Nest eco-system among others.  Knowing how to manage the battery power in your mesh network solution endpoints is critical to your success.  WTSi can help you with this.  Additionally, if your product is to function in an industrial, M2M, or otherwise natively harsh environment, WTSi can help design a system that maintains reliability using antenna diversity, frequency diversity,  and hi-reliability embedded coding techniques.

wifi (IEEE 802.11)

Connectivity to a LAN, and possibly the internet, via a hardwired or wireless connection to a local router is often desired.   While some IoT data is getting on the cloud through smartphones and GPRS, much more is being gathered by low power wireless networks (like Zigbee and 6LowPAN) and then passed to a WiFi-enabled or ethernet-enabled gateway.   WiFi technologies are constantly evolving but support for legacy protocols is always a concern.  Additionally, hardwired Ethernet offers advantages that will not be found in wireless connectivity, namely, high-reliability and the ability to power (and quite possibly charge) devices directly from your Ethernet infrastructure.  Let WTSi help you decide if your products can benefit from the features these two technologies provide.

Markets:

  • power-over-ethernet (PoE) devices
  • Internet-of-Things system gateways

low-power wide-area networks

Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWANs: LoRa, NB-IoT, RPMA, etc.) are wireless telecommunication networks designed to allow long range communications at a low bit rate among things (connected objects), such as sensors operated on a battery. The low power, low bit rate and intended use distinguish this type of network from a wireless WAN that is designed to connect users or businesses, and carry more data, using more power. A LPWAN may be used to create a private wireless sensor network, but may also be a service or infrastructure offered by a third party, allowing the owners of sensors to deploy them in the field without investing in gateway technology.

general packet radio service (GPRS)

GPRS in your alternate route to internet connectivity.  This technology utilizes the GSM cellular network infrastructure to transfer your data from remote/mobile devices and systems.  Aside from the obvious advantages of GPRS, you are only charged for the amount of data you send and, in most scenarios, this is a minimal amount of data.  There are issues with GPRS system design that need to be considered including maintaining power on your remote devices, the lack of cellular coverage in many remote areas, and a host of other considerations that WTSi will help you overcome with sound systems engineering design decisions.

gateways

Internet-of-Things (IoT) data, by definition, is headed to the cloud, and if you want to get there you need a gateway.  WTSi has designed several gateways (and gateway-ish) devices and apps for just this reason. However, not all gateway data is bound for the internet;  WTSi designed a BTLE-to-Zigbee gateway for displaying localized shooting-range data on tablets or smartphones. Additionally, one can consider their smartphone as a BTLE-to-WiFi gateway as both technologies exist in modern smartphones - all that is required is an app - which we have done that also. Call WTSi to discuss your system requirements - quite possibly its easier than you think to get your system component linked together.

radio-frequency identification (RFID)

RFID has the distinction of being able to 'localize' your assets, that is, help you track them.  It has distinct advantages over bar-codes including its resistance to weathering.  There are many different RFID protocols and each has its niche.  Active RFID chips extend your range but require a power source.  Passive RFID requires no battery but may require extreme localization (less than one foot) or a high power (2Watt) reader.  WTSi will discuss your requirements with you and help you decide if active or passiver RFID is the correct solution for you.  WTSi can also provide you with a battery-powered handheld RFID reader solution to complement your existing RFID system
